The Rec Room represents a vision from an illustrious entrepreneur based in the Cayman Islands to build a world leading, ultra-luxury Fitness and Health studio – unparalleled anywhere in the Caribbean. The challenge was undertaken by a team of globally renowned interior and gym designers, with Formatio being chosen to bring their ambitious interior concepts into reality.
Over a period of 3 months Formatio worked closely with the client, meticulously pre-fabricating all the interiors to the required fit and finish, which were then shipped to Cayman Islands and installed onsite by the Formatio team.
This gym doesn’t just meet expectations of its well-heeled clientele; it surpasses them, defining a new standard of luxury on the enchanting shores of Grand Cayman.
At the core of the design stands a reception counter, a symbol of innovation, meticulously moulded by Formatio in 3D from mineral material to create a visually stunning focal point that captivates the senses. See the steps below in this counter’s creation, from its CAD design to final install.
We take the designer's sketch and develop all the engineering detail in CAD. Our 3D model uses NURBS to create a perfectly curved outer surface, rather than fine mesh of numerous flat sections.
All the hidden supporting sections are cut from marine plywood, which stands up well to the tropical moisture. The drawers and storage compartments intricately designed and cut to the requirements of the Gym.
From the outset the joinery has been designed with a modular construction for quick assembly and optimised 'volume-weight' for its journey to the Cayman Islands by sea-freight. A full test assembly is conducted before packing.
6 weeks after dispatch from Germany, the joinery arrives in the Cayman Islands. The Formatio Installation Team is pre-booked to arrive simultaneously by air and gets to work with installation of the reception desk and other elements of joinery.
The Formatio Installation Team first starts to assemble the body, taking a matter of hours to complete due to the smart modular design which allows perfect alignment and connectivity of the components.
The reception desk's counter top is made from a resin bound stone, precision cut by waterjet to fit perfectly, and crowning the beautiful design. See the finished installation photo below.

A striking feature developed in accordance with the interior designer’s vision was the liquid metal-coated wall panelling, an artistic endeavour to add a nuanced touch of sophistication and uniqueness to the gym’s ambiance.
